The Irish Red Cross is part of the largest global network of
voluntary humanitarian action in the world – the International Red Cross and
Red Crescent Movement – which has a national organisation in nearly every
country in the world – some 189 Red Cross or Red Crescent societies in total.
The Irish Red Cross provides voluntary Ambulance Services, Mountain and Lake
Search and Rescue Services, and a broad variety of Community Based Health,
Social Care and Youth programmes here in Ireland.
The local branch was established in November 1982 and has
provided first aid services to many events over the years varying from matches
to equestrian events and everything in between. Practical First Aid courses are
organised twice a year for the general public. Training in Cardiopulmonary
Resuscitation (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
are conducted on a regular basis for the Cardiac First Response (CFR)
programme in the parish of Ballinora.
Unit members in the Ballinora/Ballincollig branch avail of
many courses such as:
Intermediate First Aid
Child Protection Programme
·
Radio Course
·
Ambulance Familiarisation Course
·
CFR and CFR Advanced
·
Manual/Patient Handling
·
Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
Members trained in CFR and EMT accompany our ambulance for
all duties covered by the branch. Other activities include Nursing Home
Visitations where members are fully trained in Hand Care, a highly valued
service, and Skin Camouflage where a fully trained practitioner holds monthly
clinics in Ballincollig.
The Cadet Section, aged from 10 to 16 years old, have a busy
programme throughout the year. Apart from learning First Aid Skills and taking
part in First Aid Competitions, they also enjoy many organised youth activities
with other branches and avail of a fun weekend organised by the National Youth
Committee.
New members are always welcome.
